  7. Post-surgical and post-sclerotherapy treatment

The benefits of Compression Therapy are plentiful and the reasons vary from person to person why you may choose to wear compression socks or stockings. Some of the most prevalent symptoms or conditions that benefit from compression therapy are:

  • Pregnancy related swelling and vein problems
  • Varicose or spider veins
  • Lymphedema or edema
  • Swelling, pain or blood clots in the lower legs, also known as DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
  • Poor circulation from sitting for long periods
  • Post-surgical and post-sclerotherapy treatment

It can even be used as a preventive measure to maintain healthy legs for someone who spends extensive amounts of time on their feet. Quite simply, when we stand still for long periods, the forces of gravity increase the pressure within the veins of the legs where the greater effects happen at the ankle and decreases gradually up the leg and body.

This pressure depends on the vertical distance of the column of blood from the heart to the foot. That’s why gradient compression stockings are designed with the pressure greatest at the ankle and diminishing as it moves up the leg in order to counter the effects of the higher venous pressures.

Compression therapy products are put on in the morning upon arising, which is typically before any significant swelling would occur, and then removed at night. Throughout the day the compression prevents blood from pooling in leg veins, which in turn helps your overall circulation and lessens or eliminates any leg swelling you may have.

When shopping for compression socks or stockings, it is best to measure earlier in the day before swelling builds in the legs. Measurements taken later in the day after swelling occurs may cause you to choose an item that is too large and then not effective.

There are many types of compression socks and stockings available without a prescription and they do offer wide-ranging benefits. Before wearing a compression therapy of 20 mmHg (Firm Compression) and above, it is generally recommended to consult your health care provider to find out if graduated compression stockings are right for you. If the answer is yes, they can tell you what pressure grade you should buy for maximum benefit and relief.

I bought them because the TED hose I was sent home from the hospital with were NOT working. They didn’t fit and were causing major pain. I bought a size up because reviews seemed mixed on which to buy. Definitely a battle to get on post-op, but they should be. Once on they feel pretty comfortable so far, but a little long. Will update if I run into issues, but so far a happy purchase.

When I first took a look, I thought "oh nooo, too small". Not at all. I took my time and followed the instructions on the package. My legs felt so much better. This compression stocking relieved swelling, and my circulation improved. Do not order a size smaller thinking you want super-duper compression. Follow the size chart. Also, I lost a pound after wearing it for a few days. It helped to eliminate excess water.

I bought these because the compression stockings the hospital put on me were WAY too small. These do run a little small so I suggest ordering the next size up. Mine came without feet, so they fit from the ankle to just past mid thigh. I will definitely order another pair if/when these wear out, which will most likely be awhile.

I have large long legs and have had trouble finding stockings that don't cut off circulation. I measured according to the chart and then went up one. A four inch stretch seems like too much. I was right. It's a perfect fit. I wore rubber dish gloves and that helped get them on easier. I didn't have any trouble wearing them at work. They are looser around the waist and abs so it's not hard when you need the bathroom. It seems like a good quality material that won't run easy. I'm going to try this brand of thigh high because they fit so well.

Very good quality and perfect length. They are very tight-fitting, but this is the first time I had to use them. I guess it is the way they are supposed to fit. Im almost 7 months pregnant and trying to avoid having circulation problems on my legs, that's why I decided to use them...but I have to say that at the end of the day I CAN'T WAIT TO TAKE THEM OFF! they do help with the small pain I had in one leg, so they work well. They weren't terribly difficult to pull up and felt pretty good once in place. Jobst really is the way to go if you can afford it.

I wear a compression stocking daily on a leg I injured in 1995. The injury caused severe DVT with lasting scarring and circulation problems. I've used several brands, a couple of different mmHg ratings, open toe, closed toe, different types of bands at the top, etc. These are by far the most effective and the most comfortable. They stay up, they allow me to wear shoes comfortably and to go barefoot. They can be hidden under slacks and jeans. They don't bind at the ankle. They don't pinch around the top. All other brands made it uncomfortable to bend my knee for any length of time, like sitting cross-legged or when asleep. I just figured I had to keep my leg straight forever. To my amazement, these allow me to sit however I like and I don't wake up with pain in my lower leg if I've bent my knee while sleeping. Wish I'd found these years ago. I'd give them 10 stars if I could.

Getting the correct size in compression can be tricky

But we'll show you how!

Every brand of compression stockings has its own, unique sizing. A medium in one brand isn’t a medium in a different brand. Measuring properly is the most important step. That’s why we have detailed instructions with helpful tips, below.

It is important to measure first thing in the morning. This is because your legs swell during the day (even if you don’t notice, they do).

Find Frequently Asked Questions and answers here. or Contact Us – we have a full staff of professional fitters so you get the best compression for you!

What You’ll Need

  1. A soft tape measurer.
  2. A place to sit.
  3. Room to sit and stand.

How To Measure Your Legs For Knee-High Compression Socks:

① Get started first thing in the morning, before your legs have starting to swell. Otherwise, you may choose a size that’s too large.

Note: If you or your doctor can’t measure your legs until later than the day, they can be elevated, bandaged, or pumped to reduce swelling.

How To Measure Your Legs For Knee-High Compression Socks â‘¡ Ankle Measurement

Measure the circumference of your ankle by placing the measuring tape at the narrowest part of the ankle and wrapping it around to make a circle. This should always be your first measurement.
